TSM this year is a parade of WMCT Scholarship and Award winners, including David Braid, Jane Coop, James Ehnes, and Angela Park. Leading the parade is Emily D’Angelo, mezzo-soprano, 2015-2016 Centennial Scholar, featured on August 4 in both the “Last Night of the Festival, Eh!” at 7 pm, and in the TSM Late Night Encore at 10.30.

Noted Toronto ophthalmologist Dr. William (Bill) Grant Macrae has died in Collingwood. He and his wife Mandy were great friends and supporters of the WMCT and arts organizations in Toronto. Mandy, a devoted volunteer, served as president of the WMCT for a three-year term beginning in 1998.

Pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin has been invested into the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec (OALQ). Charles won the WMCT’s Career Development Award competition in 2015 and played the final concert in Music in the Afternoon’s 119th season on May 4. It’s an incredible honour and achievement for Charles who is one of 16 people invested in the recent ceremony.

Toronto Hot Docs Film Festival features “Integral Man” this week about the late Jim Stewart a successful mathematician who spent a decade and a small fortune building Toronto’s Integral House, considered by many one of the city’s best performance spaces.
“After Euclid, Jim Stewart is the most published mathematician in the world”, says the Hot Docs description. Integral House reflects his two obsessions, curves and music. It is a stunning architectural gem of subtly curved wood and vast, evocative spaces.
The WMCT held a memorable concert in Integral House in 2014 to raise funds towards its 10th Career Development Award, which was a live competition won by Charles Richard-Hamelin.

Charles Richard-Hamelin plays Music in the Afternoon May 4 in his first solo Toronto recital. “I’m looking forward to my proper Toronto recital debut,” he said in a recent note to past president and Career Development Award chair Annette Sanger.
Annette presented Charles with first prize in April 2015 when he won the Career Development Award 10th Anniversary competition in Walter Hall.
That same year he went on to win silver in the International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Warsaw and the Krystian Zimerman award for the best sonata at the competition.
