Scholarship Winners give their Graduating Recitals

Two WMCT Scholarship Winners at the Faculty of Music, who performed at the Verity Club on March 20  will be giving their graduating recitals soon, in our favourite venue. Free!

Chieh-Ying Lu, the 2017-18 recipient of the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto & Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Foundation Graduate Fellowship, will have her 2nd year Oboe Master’s recital on Monday, April 16 at 4:30 PM in Walter Hall.

And Vivian Chen, the 2017-18 recipient of the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Centennial Scholarship, will have her 4th year piano recital on Saturday May 5 at 7:30 PM in Walter Hall.

WMCT “Alumnae” in concert: Rachel Mercer plays Vivian Fung

Rachel Mercer, cellist, winner of the first WMCT Centennial Scholarship in 1997, and of many other prizes since then, performs an all-Canadian programme for cello with electronics, including a new work by Vivian Fung, WMCT’s 2017 commissioned composer.

Another new work by Vivian, “Earworms”, will be given its Toronto premiere by the National Arts Centre Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall on March 24.

TSM this year is a parade of WMCT Scholarship and Award winners, including David Braid, Jane Coop, James Ehnes, and Angela Park.  Leading the parade is Emily D’Angelo, mezzo-soprano, 2015-2016 Centennial Scholar, featured on August 4 in both the “Last Night of the Festival, Eh!”  at 7 pm, and in the TSM Late Night Encore at 10.30.

What’s Up With Our Scholarship Winners?

Myriam Blardone, harp and piano, winner of the WMCT Centennial Scholarship in 2016/17 has told us of four upcoming performances.
March 3  at a Canadian Music Competition fundraiser, she is playing a solo harp piece – Remenyi Music, 210 Bloor West  7 pm.

March 31 –  she’ll perform her third year solo piano recital in Father Madden Hall at U of T at 5:30 pm. And on May 1 her third year harp recital in Walter Hall at 2:30.

April 9 Myriam will play harp with an Orchestra U of T concert at 7:30 pm in the MacMillan Theatre.

Concert Showcases WMCT Award Winners

WMCT award winners in Generation Next concert

Three young artists – all WMCT award winners in 2015 – will perform in Generation Next a special concert part of the International Association of Arts Managers Conference to be held in Toronto in November.  Pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin won the WMCT’s $20,000 Career Development Award competition in April 2015 and cellist Stéphane Tétreault won the $10,000 silver prize. Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo was awarded the $10,000 WMCT Centennial Scholarship.

The three are among five talented young Canadian musicians who will perform in Generation Next on Novemeber 10, 2016. The Royal Conservatory hosts the conference’s opening day and will present the Koerner Hall concert in the evening. 

Charles Richard-Hamelin last year continued his success winning the silver medal and the Krystian Zimerman prize at the 17th Frederic Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. It was the first time any Canadian had made it to the finals. Also in the Generation Next concert is Torontonian pianist Tony Yike Yang, who at 16 became the youngest prize winner in the history of the Chopin competition with his fifth-place finish. Pianist Alexander Seredenko recipient of the prestigious Ihnatowycz Piano Prize at The Royal Conservatory completes the list of young talent in the Generation Next concert.

Charles Richard-Hamelin‘s Career Development Award prize includes a concert in the Music in the Afternoon series and he will perform in Walter Hall on May 4, 2017.

Emily D’Angelo wins MET Auditions

Emily is completing a degree in vocal performance at U of T.

You can hear Emily in Walter Hall  March 31 from 12 to 1 pm. As winner of the University of Toronto Norcop Prize in Song, Emily and Sonya Sim, winner of the Gwendolyn Williams Koldofsky Prize in Accompanying, will perform in U of T’s complimentary Thursday Noon Recital Series.

And Soprano towards Diva

Simone Osborne, after her “surprise” debut at Music in the Afternoon on November 19, 2015, will take another large step forward in her career next year. The Canadian Opera Company has announced that its new season will include a remounting of Harry Somers’s grand opera Louis Riel in a co-production with the National Arts Centre. Composed for the 1967 centennial, this return will celebrate the work’s 50th anniversary, and will help mark the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation. Simone will play the rôle of Marguerite, a part which includes the famous “Kuyas”, the lullaby sung by Riel’s wife to their child at the beginning of Act III. The title part will showcase Russell Braun, whose first performance of many with the WMCT began with his debut as a scholarship winner in 1992.
