Artistic Director Simon Fryer, with the Zodiac Trio after the November 9, 2017 concert
Riko Higuma, piano; Kliment Krylovskiy, clarinet; Vanessa Mollard, violin
These remarkable musicians have brought this uncommon combination of instruments into the international spotlight by reviving standards and by commissioning new music. Their varied and eclectic repertoire is reflected in wonderfully imaginative programming. Works by contemporary composers from the US and Canada – Schoenfield and Gilbert – rub shoulders with Stravinsky, Khachaturian, Bartok and Shostakovich as well as Piazzolla, to reveal a fascinating journey through the music of the WMCT’s history.
Programme:
Paul Schoenfield – Fraylakh, from Trio for clarinet, violin and piano
Nicolas Gilbert — Comment révéler un secret (commissioned by the Zodiac Trio)
Igor Stravinsky — L’histoire du soldat (Suite)
Astor Piazzolla – Milonga; Muerte del Angel (arr. Riko Higuma)
Aram Khachaturian — Trio for clarinet, violin and piano
Dmitri Shostakovich — Three Duets (arr. Zodiac Trio)
Béla Bartók – Contrasts
